CURRENT PROJECTS

Altamont Community Kiosk
A Trail Hub Kiosk will be constructed at a central location within the village to provide information about local walking and hiking opportunities. A key feature of the kiosk will highlight the Long Path, a signature trail project of the New York New Jersey Trail Conference. The Trail Conference has recently extended the Long Path from High Point in Thacher Park into the village of Altamont, connecting hikers with local amenities and promoting Altamont as an official Long Path Trail Town. The kiosk marks a significant waypoint along the trail and will continue to serve as a welcoming hub for hikers, supporting a steady flow of visitors and encouraging recreational tourism in the region.
Altamont Trail Network Plan
Historic Altamont is working with LaBella Associates to develop a comprehensive Trail Network Plan for the Altamont area. The plan will coordinate existing hiking and walking trails while identifying opportunities for future trails in and around the village.
A community-wide open house with LaBella is scheduled for June 26th, 2025 to further discuss the plan and gather feedback for our final Altamont Trail Network Plan.

Altamont StoryMap
Online Tour—ArcGIS StoryMaps offers interactive maps enhanced with multimedia content and narrative text to help viewers explore historical sites, parks, and nature preserves in Altamont and the surrounding area. The tour highlights hiking trails, history trails, bird-watching locations, and more.
The Long Path Altamont
Art Project
Historic Altamont is launching a public art initiative featuring a life-size bronze sculpture at the new community kiosk. Currently in the design phase, the piece will capture the spirit of a well-worn hiker — resilient, reflective, and at rest. This seated figure will embody Altamont’s welcoming nature, linking creativity and adventure with the region’s rich character. The sculpture is envisioned as a lasting landmark that sparks imagination, invites reflection, and celebrates our individual and shared journeys.

Both the kiosk and trail network planning projects have been made possible through funding provided by Albany County Executive Daniel P. McCoy and the Albany County Legislature through the provision of the American Rescue Plan Act.
