Land Acknowledgement

Historic Altamont respectfully acknowledges that Altamont and its surrounding lands lie within the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Muhheaconneok (Mohican) people.  As the original stewards of this region, the Mohican lived in deep relationship with the land for generations.  These lands also became part of the broader territory of their western neighbors, the Kayen’keha:ka (Mohawk), who traveled these routes for trading, fishing, and war expeditions.

.

The Mohican people were forcibly displaced from their homelands through colonization and systemic efforts to remove them. Today, their community continues as the Stockbridge-Munsee Community in Wisconsin. We honor the resilience, enduring presence, and legacy of both the Mohican, Mohawk, and all Indigenous peoples connected to this land. In this spirit, we commit to upholding their legacy through responsible land stewardship and by fostering a more inclusive and respectful community for future generations.
