ABOUT US

Historic Altamont, Inc.

Historic Altamont, Inc. is a volunteer-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, established in August 2018 to promote and preserve the historical, cultural, and natural heritage of the Village of Altamont and the scenic Helderberg region. Through community collaboration and thoughtful stewardship, work to honor our shared past while celebrating the unique character and landscape that define Altamont.

Nestled at the base of the Helderberg Escarpment, Altamont is known for its charming Victorian homes, all connected by sidewalks to a vibrant, walkable downtown. Just beyond the central village  lie the historic Altamont Fairgrounds, host to the beloved annual fair and a variety of seasonal events throughout the year.

Overlooking the village is High Point Cliff, a limestone vista within John Boyd Thacher State Park, recently designated a National Natural Landmark. The park is traversed by the Long Path, a scenic trail stretching from New York City to the Adirondacks, ideal for both day hikes and long-distance treks.

Altamont and its surroundings offer abundant natural beauty and year-round opportunities for outdoor recreation. Village parks and nearby preserves managed by the Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy provide opportunities for hiking, biking, skiing, snowshoeing, birding, caving, and even hang-gliding.

Preserving Altamont’s history, scenic beauty, and recreational resources is essential to maintaining the village’s unique character. These shared efforts help strengthen our local economy and keep Altamont a welcoming place for both residents and visitors alike.
